Horn

Thomas Jöbstl was born on 5 January 1978 in Wolfsberg, Carinthia. He received his first horn lessons at the age of eight at the Wolfsberg Music School with Franz Gönitzer. From 1992 he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Roland Berger. As early as 1995 he made his debut as soloist in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, and in 1996 he gave a solo concert at the Kyoto International Music Students Festival in Japan. In 2000 he completed his studies with the degree of Magister artium.

In 1997 he became First Horn of the Vienna Volksoper; since 2001 he has been a member of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, and since 2004 a member of the Vienna Philharmonic. From 2000 to 2006 he was lecturer at the Vienna University of Music, assisting the horn class of Roland Berger. Since October 2006 he has been Professor of Horn there as Berger's successor.

Thomas Jöbstl plays the Vienna horn and is one of the most important representatives of this tradition-rich Austrian sound. He is a member of the chamber music ensemble “Wiener Virtuosen”. His awards include first prize at the Austrian federal competition “Jugend musiziert” (1992) and the “Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award” (1999).
